Kyndal’s first Christmas Program December 19, 2008

Kyndal had his first Christmas program tonight! The daycare put on a prsesentation of The Tree Trees for family and friends. And of course, my son wouldn’t be anything if he wasn’t himself. Did he stay in his place on stage and sing as he was supposed to. Absolutely not! One minute he was there, I picked my camera up and focused on his spot, get ready to snap the picture, and he’s gone! I look up and he’s standing next to his teacher and I get the impression he’s asking her to talk in the microphone that the narrator was using to tell the story cause he’s pointing and gesturing to it animatedly. We try to motion to him to go back to his place, but he flat out ignores us. Our son stands on stage, taking his reindeer antlers off – he was a reindeer in program – staring out at the audience, not singing the songs that he made us practice with him over and over and over again. Eventually he did get into the spirit. Although his place in the spotlight at the front of the stage stayed vacant, he did stand off to the side with his teacher and sing – while holding her hand most of the time. Our baby, why we thought he would do anything different, I don’t know. Kyndal will always be Kyndal. That you can take to the bank.

They don’t keep their best ones at home August 19, 2008

During our staff development today, my principal made this comment regarding the parents of the students at our school. For the last couple of years, discipline has been a major issue at our school. We got a new principal two years ago, and things just seemed to go down hill when she got there. It really time for our VP to go home because he doesn’t do anything to assist in managing the kids. And I’m not talking about the normal student who disrupts the class. I’m talking about kids who have not respect for authority – they don’t listen to their parents, so they could really care less what teachers say. I’m talking about kids who don’t expect anything out of life because their parents don’t give them anything to hope for. I’m talking about kids who think the whole world is just like the tiny impoverished neighborhood they live in because they have no life experiences outside of it. I’m talking about kids who can’t focus at school because they didn’t get to eat the night before or couldn’t sleep because music was blasting while mama entertained in the other room. I’m talking about kids who don’t know how to care about themselves, let alone anyone else, because everyone who should’ve cared for them all along has failed them.

But yet, I have to teach these kids. One of the reasons that I was dreading going back to work was because I know the kids that I’m going back to. I had plenty of opportunities to see them in action last year. I got to see them crawling on the lunchroom floor, smearing feces on the restroom walls, trashing teachers’ classrooms, spray painting the VP’s office wall. And that’s not the half of it. Seon keeps asking me why do I continue to go back. Why don’t I apply at another school. But if I do that, I will feel like I’ve turned my back on my own. Like I failed…them and myself. “They don’t keep their best ones at home.” I have to find a way to get through to them.

This is Kyndal.

This is Kyndal’s “Lighting Keen Cup”(quite used I might add)

This is Kyndal with his “Lighting Keen Cup”

Kyndal has had his “Lighting Keen Cup” (oh yeah, that’s Kyndalese for Lightning McQueen Cup) for some time. When I think about it, he’s actually had it over half of his life. He loves his “Lighting Keen Cup” and just won’t part with it. He wants to drink out of it every single time he has a drink. (So glad he has more than one!) I’ve tried to get him interested in a “big boy” cup, but he’s not having it. Now don’t get me wrong, I love the fact that he can take his cup into the family room and I don’t have to worry about carpet stains or anything. I do worry sometimes the effect that it’s having on his teeth, but they look fine, so I don’t stress. Some kiddos have blankies and binkies. My lil’ munchkin has his “Lighting Keen Cup”. Now if he’s still attached by the time he gets to kindergarten, then we might have a problem.

Do your kids have special things they are attached to?

Missing my baby like crazy! July 30, 2008

Well, it has hit me hard! I miss my baby like crazy! Kyndal left to spend a week with NaeNae on Sunday when she went back to Killeen. I was so looking forward to this break, but I miss hearing his whiny voice calling mommy to play. I miss chasing him around the house. I miss swinging him around like he’s always asking me to do. I miss cuddling with him at night. I even miss him waking up bright and early each morning asking for his chocolate milk, pancakes, and eggs. Mind you, I haven’t cooked breakfast at all this week since he’s been gone. So Dominic and Bryson are probably ready for him to get back for this reason if no other. Nope, Mom hasn’t cooked breakfast in four days!

Now wouldn’t you know it, he is having asthma symptoms now that he’s there! I talked to him yesterday and noticed the signs immediately. I mentioned it to NaeNae and she said that he’d been wheezing the night before. Of course I packed his nebulizer to go with him, but in the rush I didn’t notice that the medicine cap didn’t get into the bag. So I looked on the internet to find a medicine supply store in their area, which the closest one ended up being in Temple. He hadn’t had any asthma issues in the past month or so. But as soon as he leaves, they flare up. But I guess it just wouldn’t be Kyndal if he wasn’t starting a ruckus in some way or another.

Needless to say, I’m so looking forward to tomorrow when he gets home. All of the things he’s been begging me to do, we will do: go swimming, make sno-cones, go to the movies, go bowling, and go to Six Flags to name a few. This is the first time my baby has been away from me this long and I can’t wait for him to get back home.

Swollen Penis! March 24, 2008

WOW!!! D came home last night. Before bed he came in our room and showed me his little penis and it was swollen! I had never seen anything like that before. Not that I’ve looked at many penises but, anyway. It shocked S as well. One night before he left for Spring Break vacation he started complaining about a slight stinging sensation when he peed. I gave him a cranberry tablet and had him to drink plenty of water because I figured he was starting to get a bladder infection and I didn’t want to accrue any unnecessary medical bills since we are trying to get our finances together. I know, maybe not the best idea. But he didn’t complain anymore and said that he wasn’t feeling any stinging anymore afterwards. I talked to my mom Saturday and she said he complained about it again one night while he was there and she had him to drink water because she was figuring it was the same thing. My mom is a nurse, so I guess I wasn’t completely off track in my thinking sense she thought the same. As I was looking at his penis, I noticed an area on his thigh that looked like he’d been bitten by something. He said it didn’t hurt and never bothered him really, but he did remember that area itching a little a few days before. I don’t know how that would cause his penis to swell. So, needless to say, we are about to make a trip to the doctor’s office. I will update once we find out what is going on with him.

Back Home…Again September 16, 2007

Well, B is back home! Inside I’m yelling “YAAAYYY!” I always told him that if he left and things weren’t what he expected that he always has a home here. My mama never kicked me out and I won’t do that to him either. He says that he’s not being scheduled for as many hours now so he’s not making as much money. So it’s starting to be a strain with his rent, car payment, and insurance. I’m not going to make him struggle through a situation that he didn’t create just to prevent more problems for us. So welcome back home, B! I missed ya!
